It’s Been Quiet Lately…Life Update

Posted by Caitie F on December 9, 2014

This blog has been a little quiet lately, mostly because I have been enjoying books by our agency’s authors so I can’t really review them. They are all fabulous and I am learning I actually like romance! So now the only things I don’t really read is westerns.

I have a bunch of fun end-of-the-year posts coming with my favorite books of the year, an awesome survey, a post on TV, and a couple challenge signups for next year. One is VERY ambitious, but I want to go for it because it could cut almost 50 books from my TBR list!

On the work front, it has been great. I love my colleagues and the other agencies that share our office space are all amazing. Our authors rock. I have completed my first round of interns and am picking my spring interns tomorrow. We have SO many partial manuscripts right now that it is taking up a lot of my time outside of work, but it is a god problem to have. Query letters have been REALLY strong lately. The rain today is my only complaint.

I hope you are all doing well and getting ready for the holiday season!

TSS: Big Update

Posted by Caitie F on August 24, 2014

Happy Sunday evening everyone! I have had a very busy weekend, so I haven’t been abel to get this up until now.

You may have noticed I am posting even less than usual, and there is a reason for that. Almost two months ago, I started a new job. I am now the assistant at Liza Dawson Associates literary agency and I LOVE it. Everyone I work with is amazing. I have learned so much already and I know I will continue learning more and more each day. It is literally a dream job and I am just so happy.

I will never review any of our authors’ books on this blog, which is too bad because our authors are so incredible and you would love so many of their books. But I shouldn’t so I won’t.

This new job means a lot of reading for work and less reading for fun. It means a lot of reading our client’s backlist which I will not be reviewing. I am still reading for fun and have several book reviews scheduled, but I will be posting less. There are only so many hours in a day.

BUT I have rejoined goodreads, so I now have a libraything, which can be found at https://www.librarything.com/profile/caitief and a goodreads account which you can find at https://www.goodreads.com/caitief, so please add me on whichever you use! I am always looking for more books to add to my to-read list!

Other than that I have had a great summer of spending time with my amazing husband and our awesome friends. Next weekend we are heading for a quick weekend in Ohio where we get to see the whole family and I cannot wait!

2013 Goals – How Did I Do?

Posted by Caitie F on December 30, 2013

I just went back to look at my goals I posted in January of 2013. Let’s see how I did!

Book related goals

Read 100 books – Did that one! As of now, I am at 152 and might get a couple more!
Read 10 nonfiction books – Fail! I only read 5. Probably due to all of the reading I did for work. But I really liked those five.

Blog more regularly. I have a lot of discussion posts ideas, but I feel like I don’t get enough traffic to do them. – I kind of did this one. I have a lot of review posts scheduled into next year (one for June already), but my posting for 2013 was down and I didn’t do any discussion posts. Still have the ideas, but feel discouraged.

Health goals

Get back to 150 pounds. – nope. Lost some weight, but not enough. Got an UP band for the holidays, so hopefully that will help

Now that I have more flexible insurance, get some new doctors. – I am giving this a yes. We got a new primary doctor who we LOVE. I still need a geneticist and a hip doctor, but got over the biggest hurdle. It makes such a difference when we like and trust who we have!

Become stronger. Losing weight is all well and good but I am sick of feeling weak. Since I am all about concrete goals
– be able to bench press more than the bar. This goal may change if I find out the barbell isn’t that hard, but I haven’t done and bench presses since high school. – not even close. I am still a weakling
– be able to do a pull up. I haven’t been able to since I was a kid. – Ha!

Do more active things, especially in spring and fall. It can be going on hikes, playing basketball together, just be outside more. – Another kind of. We did do some more active things, just not as much as I would like

Other goals

Get our finances in better shape. – It is better, but not where we need to be.

Go on vacation. – Did this one! We went on a cruise to the Bahamas and it was wonderful!

Cook more new things! – Completed! We cooked at least 30 new things this year!

So overall, I think I did pretty okay this year. Could have done better, but we all can. How did you do on your goals for the year?

TSS: A Wonderful Weekend and Books

Posted by Caitie F on April 7, 2013

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! My birthday was on Friday, so we celebrated all weekend long. My husband is a fantastic cook and he made me a special dinner. We celebrated with friends last night and just had a wonderful time overall. The only thing that could make it better is if my parents could celebrate with me, but they will be here in a couple months!

I have read some amazing books this week for work. They don’t come out for a while, so the posts are all scheduled, but there are a lot of great middle grade coming soon. So if you like middle grade books or know some 9-12 year olds who are looking for great books, I will be featuring them more. There are mysteries, fantasy books, and science fiction. I think this fall is the year for middle grade books.

There are several books on my soon-to-read list that I am very excited about! The next book i am reading from the 1001 Books list is Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. I have heard it is challenging, but is one of the great American novels. I really hope I like it. I also am on the list for The Clockwork Princess at my library. I also am finally reading Gone Girl this week!

If you read this on the blog and not in a feed, you will notice that there is no longer a link to goodreads. Once Amazon bought goodreads, i transfered all my books over to LibraryThing. I am also looking at Bookish, but I have used LibraryThing before and think it is worth it for a lifetime membership. The owner is very open and they are constantly working to make it even better.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Top Ten Series I’d Like To Start But Haven’t Yet – Top Ten Tuesday

Posted by Caitie F on March 5, 2013

I don’t tend to do any of these, but I love the one today, so I thought I would put up a simple list of the top ten series I need to start! This is hosted by the amazing The Broke and the Bookish

1. Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

I devoured The Uglies series, so why haven’t I started this one yet?

2. Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde.

They are mysteries with literary characters. Need I say any more?

3. The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa

I am not a fan of books about faeries, but I have heard this one is fantastic, so I want to try

4. Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Just somehow missed this one and need to change that

5.  Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

It looks like my kind of series!

6. The Kingfiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

My husband read it and loved it and I think it looks wonderful

7. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow

This has been recommended to me multiple times, I need to start it!

8. The Passage by Justin Cronin

They are long books, but I love the idea of this series

9. The Girl Who Circumvented Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making by Catherynne Valente

I know this author can write and it is the kind of setting I would love

10. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Everyone I know who has read this loves it.

What do you want to read from this list? What have you read? What should I go and read right now?

TSS: President’s Day Weekend

Posted by Caitie F on February 17, 2013

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you are all having a good long weekend! I have been off since Friday, I took a vacation day so I could spend some extra time with my husband and it was really nice. I needed that day off. I thought I would catach up with random things!

Library awesomeness

My library did the blind date with a book again and I got out…five books. Which is a lot, but I think the idea is so fun! I got

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury which I am currently reading and loving! I can’t believe it took me so long. Every few pages I have to stop and think about what i am reading.

Persuasion by Jane Austen – I am planning on reading this, it is on my list!

The Blind Side – I read the first chapter but it is more about football than the story, so I took it back.

One for the Money – I will try this one. I haven’t read any of the Stephanie plum books, so might as well try one!

Abraham Lincoln – While i am interested in history, the level of this particular version was a little simple, so I am taking it back unread.

Looking forward to

These are some longer/different books, so it may be longer than usual before i post another review, so here are some thing I am reading/looking forward to:

A Room With a View by E.M Forster – was reading this on my ereader and wanted to actually read it faster, so I got it out of the library too.

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen – the ARC is on my shelf and I really want to read it right now, but then there is no more Sarah Dessen so I am waiting a little longer.

Beautiful Days by Anna Godbersen – this is the sequel to Bright Young Things which I adored so much that I got the next book the very next day. I just need to get to it!

What are you reading? What are you looking forward to? Let me know in the comments!

2013 Goals

Posted by Caitie F on January 17, 2013

I am kind of late to the party on this, but I didn’t want to make resolutions this year, I wanted to make goals. Some people may say they are the same thing, but I see goals as being more concrete. If I don’t make them all, that is fine. They aren’t high pressure goals. They are just things I want to do. I can always try again next year!

Book related goals

Read 100 books – recurring goal from now until forever. Have to put a dent into all the book I want to read somehow. And I want to read ALL THE BOOKS it seems
Read 10 nonfiction books – I loved learning in college. Homework, not so much, but I loved to learn new things. This is my way of continuing it. I hope that not all of these are memoirs (but memoirs do count) and I want most to be more recent history. I feel like I am severely lacking in post WWII knowledge.

Blog more regularly. I have a lot of discussion posts ideas, but I feel like I don’t get enough traffic to do them. Screw not having enough traffic, I want to do them anyway!

Health goals

Get back to 150 pounds. I have wanted to for a while but have been failing. It is better for my hip and my overall health.

Now that I have more flexible insurance, get some new doctors. I want to find a primary doctor I like. I also need some specialists –  especially a hip doctor and a geneticist. I am due to check into my unknown disease. so I need to do it.

Become stronger. Losing weight is all well and good but I am sick of feeling weak. Since I am all about concrete goals
– be able to bench press more than the bar. This goal may change if I find out the barbell isn’t that hard, but I haven’t done and bench presses since high school.
– be able to do a pull up. I haven’t been able to since I was a kid.

Do more active things, especially in spring and fall. It can be going on hikes, playing basketball together, just be outside more.

Other goals

Get our finances in better shape. We are doing pretty well, but I want to cut out more debt. I have conrete goals, but don’t really want to share them in public.

Go on vacation. We haven’t really gone away for more than a weekend since our honeymoon and we both desperately need it to relax and recharge. We really want to go on a cruise to the Bahamas.

Cook more new things! Last year we probably tried 30+ new dishes, some which are now in our “cook once a month” rotation. We should continue and i would like to try 30 more.

This is a lot, but I am sure I can accomplish quite a bit of it!

D0 I have any goals you are also doing? Let me know in the comments and we can support each other!

TSS: Reading More Slowly

Posted by Caitie F on September 9, 2012

My slower reading pace has continued. That is what I get for not taking a break between the last two A Song of Fire and Ice without a break. I love the series and the writing style, but it is a LOT of one style and one series. Dance With Dragons is a fantastic book but it is taking me forever to read. I am about halfway done and am going to try finish it in the next couple weeks.

I didn’t read at all last week…but i had a really good reason!

My older brother got married!

It was a beautiful ceremony and a really fun reception. I have an amazing new sister-in-law and I am so happy for my brother! We were in the wedding party and it was not stressful at all. IT was fun and an honor ot be part of their special day.

IT was just a wonderful weekend seeing family back in Ohio and I am very happy that my parents are coming to visit in October!

I did finish a book this week, but it doesn’t come out until next year, which sucks because it was amazing. I wrote my review already and it is the definition of a rave. I am so excited for the release of this book! But I have to finish some books that are already out and speed up!

Hope everyone else has had a great weekend, reading and otherwise!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Posted by Caitie F on April 5, 2012

I am turning 25. It is the first time I have ever felt old. I know in reality it isn’t old at all, but I guess I just always had ideas of where I would be when I was 25, and I am not yet, so it is affecting me for the first time.

But I will get over it because I am mostly happy!

No big plans for today – working which only sucks because my amazing husband is on spring break so I would rather be wit him…but he was a sweetheart and woke up with me! We go out to dinner with his parents every week, so we are doing that when i get home. Don’t get to see any gifts until I get home at 8, but that is okay too. I am going out to lunch with a good friend from work, so that should be fun!

Most of the celebrating will happen this weekend. We are seeing friends Friday and Saturday nights, so that is exciting!

We don’t really celebrate Easter (since we live near his Jewish family, who are not Jewish enough to celebrate Passover), so Sunday afternoon we are heading to Atlantic City! One hotel has what has been called the best pool in the state. We won’t be seeing that on Sunday though, we will have a yummy meal and play poker.

Then Monday (which I am taking off of work). We are going to the 21 and older only pool. It is 82 degrees and looks like the most relaxing place in the world. There are hotubs, a very large pool., a bar, and a small restaurant. I am bringing two books with me (not sure what yet, one will be a beach-y read) and enjoying my day!

I am really excited about all of it and so happy for another year with family, friends, and the wonderful blogging community.

I was going to do a giveaway, but I don’t like having more than one going, so there will be a large post BEA giveaway instead!

TSS: Good Reading Week!

Posted by Caitie F on March 4, 2012

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you have had a nice weekend. We have been busy, but busy in a good way. We had an excellent dinner with friends on Friday, I had a successful if rather empty crafting group yesterday, and we had fun playing games with another group of friends last night! Today we are heading to the gym, grocery shopping, and relaxing, which we really need.

This week has been pretty good for reading. I finished my first YA book of the year with City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. It was great and while I don’t really need another series, it is a good one!

I have four books going right now!

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare: I jumped right into the next one and like it just as much. I would have finished it already, but I am reading to books for work.

A book for work that comes out in October that I think will be really big. I and about 100 pages in and am so impressed! I love finding great debut authors!

Another book i can’t tell you anything about. But it is good.

The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I am finally reading the seventh book in anticipation of the new one coming out. THe new one is being labeled 4.5 since it is kind of a prequel and fits between books 4 and 5, but I still want to be done with the series before it comes out!

Speaking of Stephen King, did you see he is writing a sequel to The Shining? It is called Dr. Sleep and I am excited! It is supposed to be scary and creepy like the first. No release date since it isn’t even done being written, but it is something for King fans to be excited about!

So I have been busy with reading and enjoying every book i am in the middle of. Now if I could just freeze time so I could finish them all….
